Struggling to pay for the third heart surgery for her child, leaving the mother and child in the hospital, Ms. C’s husband continued to work because that was the family’s only source of income to pay for the outstanding hospital bills. The treatment process was still long but the money was exhausted.
On a rainy day in early July, we visited P.D.P (January 10, 2023) who is being treated at the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute. P. was born into a family of 5 members in Phu My town, Ba Ria Vung Tau province. Her father, L. (1985), is currently a leather shoe worker with an average salary of 7-9 million VND/month. Her mother, C. (1987), is currently a housewife. In her free time, she works extra to earn money to support her 2 children who are studying. However, since P. discovered her illness (June 2023), C. has packed up and taken her child to the hospital for a check-up, so she has no additional income.
When P. was 5 months old, her family discovered that she was losing weight and vomiting violently every time she breastfed. When examined at Children’s Hospital 2, she was diagnosed with Atrioventricular canal malposition – Atrial septal defect. When hearing the news, Mr. and Mrs. C. were extremely shocked and stunned because they did not expect their child to have this strange disease. Ms. C. and her husband ran around borrowing money to pay for surgery for their child. As of June 2024, P. had undergone 2 surgeries with a total cost of more than 100 million VND at Children’s Hospital 2 and was preparing for the 3rd surgery at the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute when she was just 18 months old. For this third surgery, P.’s surgery cost was nearly 100 million VND. The family pooled together and borrowed money to pay an advance payment of 30 million VND. Thanks to the Social Work Department’s connection and support, the cost was partly paid off, but the amount the family owed the hospital as of July 2, 2024 was still 31,671,994 VND.
When we arrived, P. was still having a fever. The doctor asked us to monitor him for another 3 weeks. If his health stabilizes, he can go home. Currently, his daily hospital bill is 2.3 million VND. Ms. C. shared her son’s situation with a worried voice because the family is no longer able to pay P.’s hospital bill. Every day he stays in the hospital, the debt to the hospital increases. She loves her son very much but there is nothing she can do. Given P.’s family’s situation, the LOTUS CHARITY FOUNDATION (LCF) hopes to raise 22 million VND (of which 20 million VND will be paid for hospital fees and 2 million VND will be used to support his nutrition), hoping that he will recover soon and be discharged to return home with his family.
