Up to this year, T. has had her third heart surgery. Ms. H. has spent all the family’s savings to pay for her child’s hospital fees, but it was just a drop in the ocean. Every night, seeing T. coughing all night without being able to sleep, Ms. H. can only sigh helplessly because she feels sorry for her child.
Duong.T.C.T. (born in 2013) is a pretty, well-behaved girl – that was our impression when we visited the Department of Surgery 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute. T. was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and underwent her first surgery at 5 months old, and her second surgery at 2.5 years old. This year, when she turned 11, she was diagnosed with stenosis of the shunt/APSO 2015 PTTĐ by the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute and the surgery cost 85 million VND even though she had health insurance support. This is an extremely large amount of money for her family. Her father, Mr. A., works as a traditional motorbike taxi driver, sometimes with rides and sometimes without, earning just over 5 million VND per month. Her mother, Ms. H., is a housewife and a seasonal worker for a garment factory, but since T. was hospitalized, she has no income. In addition to T., the family also has a twin sister and a younger sister who is of school age. Alone, Mr. A. shouldered the living expenses of the whole family, tuition for all 3 children and now hospital fees for T. The hardship was indescribable.

Faced with their child’s condition, Mr. A. and Ms. H. spent all their savings in recent years and borrowed money from relatives to pay for the surgery in advance and were able to pay 20 million VND in advance for this surgery. Thanks to the connection and support from the Social Work Department, the cost has been partly paid, but the amount the family owes the hospital as of July 4, 2024 is still more than 15 million VND. The doctor informed that T. still needs to be given antibiotics and monitored for about 15 more days before being completely stable and discharged from the hospital. After the surgery, T. had pneumonia, so she coughed all day and night. The Lotus Charity Foundation hopes to raise 22 million VND (of which 20 million VND will be paid for hospital fees and 2 million VND will be used for nutritional support), hoping that she will recover soon and be discharged from the hospital to return home with her family.
