Saigon has entered the rainy season, the mother looked at the pouring rain absentmindedly, worried about how her two disabled sons would survive at home when she was away. She had been away for nearly 2 months to take her daughter with cerebral palsy for treatment, and she did not know when she would come back home.
Tran T.Q.M. (1996) was born into a family of 8 children. M. suffered from cerebral palsy since childhood and was mentally unstable. M.’s family has been a poor family in Dak Lak province for many years. M. also has 2 disabled brothers and a father with diabetes who passed away a few months ago. All the worries about life, medical expenses and care fell on the shoulders of Ms. T. – M.’s mother.
At first, M. only had cracked heels, but her mental state was not clear, so she refused to let her mother bandage them. She walked around barefoot for a long time, leading to infection. M. was treated locally for several months, but her condition did not improve and left behind long-lasting ulcers on both heels. When the disease became more severe, M. was transferred by his family to Military Hospital 175 on June 5, 2024 with the diagnosis: ulcers, infection of the right and left heels/Cerebral palsy since childhood, severe chronic anemia, electrolyte disturbances, and physical exhaustion.
To treat M., Ms. T. emptied all the money in the house. Relatives and neighbors felt sorry for her and borrowed money to help her take M. to Saigon for a medical examination. Even though she had health insurance, the additional costs still made Ms. T. unable to sleep because she could not find the money to pay for her child. Every day that passed, seeing the hospital fees increase by 1.5 – 2 million VND each day, the old mother’s back seemed to bend a little more under the pressure.
According to the Social Work Department of Military Hospital 175, M. is responding well to medication but the date of discharge is not yet known because her mental state is not clear, sometimes she cannot control her behavior, affecting the examination and treatment process. Currently, as of July 19, 2024, the family owes 5.5 million VND in hospital fees. To encourage Ms. T. and share part of the economic burden with the family, the Lotus Charity Foundation hopes to mobilize 17 million VND (of which 15 million VND is paid for hospital fees and 2 million VND is for support), hoping that M. will soon recover and reunite with her family.
