As the main breadwinner in the family, when he heard that his mother needed surgery for a frontal bone tumor, Dg. ran around everywhere to borrow money from friends to pay the hospital fees. Now his mother has had surgery, but the daily expenses make Dg. worried because he is temporarily out of work, and the family’s main source of income has been cut off.
We went to see Ms. Huynh T.C.D. (1968) on the first day of August. Next to the bed was her daughter Dg. who shyly shared with us about her mother’s situation, which made us feel sorry. Ms. D. has been living with a benign bone tumor for the past 10 years, but in the past 2 weeks, the tumor has grown abnormally large, causing Ms. D.’s head to feel very painful. After examination, she was admitted to Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital with a diagnosis of frontal bone tumor and had emergency surgery on July 26, 2024. She is currently in Department of Surgery 1 waiting for a biopsy to see the condition of the tumor. If it is a benign tumor, she can go home in a few days or ten days, but if it is a malignant tumor, she will need to undergo chemotherapy/radiation therapy.
Speaking of Ms. D’s family situation, it is difficult to describe in words. Her husband is old and has a spinal disease. Her eldest son has been depressed since he was a child and has to go to the hospital every month to get medicine. The youngest daughter is a garment worker but her salary is just enough to live on. Since Ms. D fell ill, the whole family has been in trouble, her daughter also had to temporarily stop working to help her father take turns taking care of her mother. Ms. D’s surgery and hospital fees amounted to 70-80 million VND, and her family has managed to pay more than 40 million VND (of which 20 million was the family’s savings and more than 20 million VND the daughter borrowed from friends). According to the Red Cross of the hospital, as of August 1, 2024, the family still owes about 7-8 million VND in hospital fees and is unable to pay.
Given Ms. D’s situation, the Lotus Charity Foundation hopes to raise 15 million VND (of which 13 million will be paid for hospital fees and 2 million for compensation). Hopefully, this amount of money will partly solve the immediate hospital fee difficulties and Ms. D will soon be well enough to return home.
