We visited the next medical case in need of support at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases. After asking about Mr. H’s family situation, we could only say that it was extremely difficult. Mr. H’s wife is truly an extremely resilient woman as she is both the breadwinner of the family and has taken care of her husband and child with cancer for a long time.
Today we visited Mr. Dao V.H. (1973) who is currently residing in Binh Tan District. Mr. H. and his wife, Ms. T., have been working in Saigon for many years. Just when they had saved a little, 5 years ago Mr. H. was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Feeling sorry for her husband’s serious illness, Ms. T. pooled all her savings, borrowed more from relatives and borrowed money from outside sources, totaling more than 120 million VND to complete 6 chemotherapy sessions. After chemotherapy, Mr. H.’s health has improved but he no longer has the strength to work. He only stays home to help his wife cook, clean the house and help the neighbors when needed.
Ms. T. works hard to save every penny to take care of her husband and pay off her debt. She weaves canvas chairs, earning 120,000-320,000 VND per day depending on her health. Her female colleagues sympathize with her and send her some money every week to buy medicine for her husband and children. When she was almost done paying off her debt, Ms. H.’s youngest child was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She had to have more than 52 lymph nodes removed in her chest and back. Currently, she has to take calcium supplements every day to maintain her health or she will have seizures.
Her husband was sick, her child was sick, her family was in debt, and her finances were exhausted, but it seemed that nothing could defeat this strong woman until July 24, 2024, when Mr. H. showed symptoms similar to a stroke. Too worried, Ms. T. took her husband to the emergency room and was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases with a diagnosis of generalized tetanus in the full-blown stage. When taking her husband to the emergency room, Ms. T. had only 2.7 million VND in her pocket, which was her new salary and 6 million VND borrowed from her neighbors. Although she had health insurance for the poor, as of August 5, 2024, Mr. H.’s treatment cost was more than 14 million VND, and the family had advanced 4 million VND. The cost of the next stage of treatment was around 40-50 million VND. This amount was so large that Ms. T. was at a loss as to how to handle it.
Currently, Mr. H. is in the Adult Intensive Care Unit in a coma. The doctor predicts that in the next 1-2 weeks, Mr. H. will have a tetanus outbreak, with an 80% chance of survival. Given the critical situation of the family, the Lotus Charity Foundation hopes to raise 30 million VND (28 million for hospital fees and 2 million for compensation). We hope that you, the benefactors, will join us in supporting Mr. H.’s family to overcome this difficult period.
