Although they do not have much money, Ms. T’s children still take her from Binh Dinh to Saigon to get checked for cancer, rain or shine. Although the cost of treatment is not small, as long as their mother is still with them, they will always try their best.
Ms. T. wore a very old hat when she met us, the hat just barely concealed her thin, short, salt-and-pepper hair that had been cut short due to long-term cancer treatment. Ms. Nguyen T. T. (born 1961) currently lives in Binh Dinh province. Her family works as farmers on rented fields, so they are not very well off. Ms. T. and her husband have 8 children, 7 girls and 1 boy. Currently, all 7 daughters are married, the youngest son went to Saigon to work as a factory worker, earning just enough to live on.
Ms. T. is currently living with her husband, who is nearly 70 years old. He had a mild stroke a few months ago. After the stroke, the right side of her body was completely weak and she was completely unable to work. In addition to cancer, Ms. T. also suffered from Bell’s palsy and a weak left leg due to a fall 7 years ago. The couple depended on each other for simple meals prepared by their daughter’s family. Looking back and forth for the whole year, there was no extra money.
In 2023, Ms. T. felt chest pain so she went to the doctor and discovered that she had a malignant tumor in the upper lobe of her right lung – Stage IV metastasis in both lungs. Since then, she has been continuously examined and treated at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital for a year. Each month, the cost of transportation and examination fees is up to 8-10 million VND. Ms. T. spent all her money on medical treatment. Her two daughters, who married men in the same commune, even had to borrow money from the bank to pay for their mother’s medical examination. The two sisters shared that they only had one mother, and that they would do everything they could to keep her healthy. The remaining children, whether married or not, would send their mother an additional 300,000-500,000 VND each month to support her. Every time their mother had a follow-up appointment with the doctor, each family would assign someone to take her there, rain or shine.
According to the Social Work Department of Gia Dinh People’s Hospital, Ms. T. is currently undergoing regular outpatient treatment and her circumstances are truly difficult. Therefore, the Lotus Charity Foundation hopes to mobilize support of 15 million VND to pay directly to Ms. T.’s hospital fees. Hopefully, in the next few months of medical examination, Ms. T. will be able to reduce some of the financial burden and become healthier.
