Kieu N.G.H. (2018), from Khanh Hoa, was diagnosed with congenital heart disease in her mother’s womb. A few months after giving birth, she had her first heart surgery. Because of her love for her child, her father, Mr. H., quit his construction job to stay home and take care of her child. Her mother is a bank accountant with a monthly salary of only 8 million VND. She lives with her grandparents, although she has a pension, she also has to take care of her mentally ill uncle, so the family’s finances are just enough to eat, with no surplus.

In 2024, after a re-examination, H. was assigned to have heart surgery. She was hospitalized and had heart surgery on June 21, 2024 at the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute. After the surgery, she had complications, so she had to undergo two more minor surgeries before being transferred to the Department of Surgery 1 for treatment. With all their love, her family used up all their savings and borrowed money from friends and relatives to pay for H.’s hospital fees. However, congenital heart disease is a very specific disease with expensive treatment costs. The money the family could save was just a drop in the ocean. According to the Social Work Department of the Heart Institute, the family had paid 55 million VND. Philanthropists had supported 151 million VND. The remaining amount as of August 12, 2024 was nearly 88 million VND. H. will need to stay in the hospital for about another month while the family has exhausted their finances.
